What is Plurality?

Plurality is a spectrum and thus has a very broad definition, so I'll try to define it for my specific case. Plurality occurs when repeated trauma at a young age forces the brain to cope - dissociating, fracturing the personality, compartmentalizing different emotions, memories, behaviors, etc. into separate "personalities."

Terminology

  • Alter / Part - The term for separated personalities.

  • System - The collection of parts that make up a whole person.

  • The Body - The physical body of a system.

  • Fronting - When a part in a system gains complete consciousness and control of the body.

  • Switching - When the part fronting changes.

  • Front stuck - When a part cannot switch out.

  • Dissociative Amnesia - When your mind blocks out information, causing “gaps” in your memory. In most cases, the memories are still there but can’t be accessed.

  • Headspace - An imagined space where parts are visible as people that can move around, express themselves and talk to each other. We have multiple headspaces.

Lived ExperienceI have many parts with their own likes, dislikes, values, goals, outlooks on life, etc. We're generally similar enough to where we don't appear very different on the outside, but we can have varying relationships with each other from hating each other to admiring each other. We all have different functions, memories, and emotions, so parts front when they are needed. They may also leave/enter the front when they are triggered by something. This occurs with varying levels of amnesia.Sometimes, parts can get front stuck and are forced to deal with things they don't know how to deal with. This can result in one part not knowing about something important, not knowing how to do a certain task, or not knowing how to feel certain emotions. This can be very stressful and cause us to have anxiety attacks as well as other symptoms of anxiety.Parts have a varied level of communication. When switching, parts will usually co-exist for a few minutes until the previously fronting part slowly fades away. Sometimes, multiple parts can be near the front and vaguely communicate with each other. More rarely, during very stressful times, multiple parts can communicate decently well. During times like this, our headspace is very vivid.Switches can occur at varying levels of severity. Usually, switches are gentle and don't involve much amnesia besides a loss of "emotional connection" to what the previously fronting part was experiencing.Sometimes, particularly when triggered, parts can "black out" and another part will immediately come to the front. In this case, emotional amnesia is much more complete and amnesia relating to things that have happened recently will also occur. Sometimes, there can also be a feeling of "skipping through time," when the part fronting only remembers things from a previous period of time (anywhere from a few hours to several months). In the worst case, complete dissociative amnesia can occur, where parts or even an entire system can "die." In these cases, the new part or system will label themself as a separate entity from the previous system. For example: when we got dissociative amnesia in 2021, we called ourself [deadname] #2 and desired a different name entirely. We felt unshakably like a completely different person and did not desire to be associated with or identified as the previous system.I was diagnosed with DID in 2025, though it became an integral part of my life in 2013 when I was about 13 years old.

MusicI like a wide variety of music!Something important about music relating to me is where I got my alias from. 春雨 (spring rain) is the name of a song by Elephant Gym, which is my favorite band.Anyway, I have a short playlist below that tries to get across my music taste without too many songs.

I am not trained in any instruments, but I grew up expected to be a bluegrass musician like my mom. I played a little bit of guitar and mandolin but I never stuck with it. However, I'd really like to learn oboe in the future!!

Art
I primarily enjoy art in styles coming out of Japan, Korea, and China.
Here are a couple moodboards that describe what I like!

Art

I've been drawing since the very end of 2019 and have been doing so extremely on and off. As a result, I really haven't improved much compared to others in that time. However, I do have a few drawings I like!

Videos I've made

Post-amnesia, I haven't made a whole lot. I've made a couple small videos and one insanely ginormous giganomanormous 4-hour video essay about Mizuki Akiyama from Project Sekai. Here are those:
